After the king of the Ammonites died, David tried to show kindness to his son, Hanun. But Hanun got ugly. He seized David’s envoys, shaved off half of each man’s beard, cut off their garments at the buttocks, and sent them away. (Verse 4)
It was on and cracking after that. David’s army went to battle against the Ammonites and the Arameans who tried to help them. The Ammonites lost and the Arameans were afraid to help the anymore.-----

This is the famous chapter about David and Bathsheba.
David was walking around on the roof of his palace and saw Bathsheba bathing. He asked who she was and was told she was the wife of Uriah the Hittite. Still, he had Bathsheba brought to him and slept with her.
She got pregnant!
David tried to pull a fast one by having Uriah go sleep with his wife so that he’d think the baby was his. But Uriah was faithful, he slept at the entrance to the palace instead of going home. David tried twice, even getting Uriah drunk. But it didn’t work.
So…David decided he would just have to have Uriah killed on the battlefront. And did.
Then David married Bathsheba and they had a son.
“But the thing David had done displeased the Lord.” (Verse 27)-----

Nathan rebukes David in chapter 12. He tells him a story about a rich man and a poor man. When the rich man had a visitor, he killed the one little ewe lamb that belonged to the poor man, rather than taking one of his own many sheep, and served it to the traveler.
David was livid! He was ready to put the man to death!
“Then Nathan said to David, ‘You are the man!’” (Verse 7)
Nathan tells David that calamity is going to come on his house. People are going to sleep with his wives in broad daylight (although he did it in secret).
David repents. The Lord takes away his sin but the son born to David has to die. And he does.
Later, David goes to Bathsheba again and she gets pregnant with Solomon.
At the end of the chapter, Joab fights against Rabbah of the Ammonites and captures the royal citadel.
He says, “I have fought against Rabbah and taken its water supply. Now muster the rest of the troops and besiege the city and capture it. Otherwise I will take the city, and it will be named after me.” Hmmm…-----

Boy oh boy, do things get messy in chapter 13.
David had multiple wives (9), and they had multiple children – except for Michal, Saul’s daughter, who had none.
Amnon was the only son of David’s wife Ahinoam. David’s wife Maacah had two children: Absalom and Tamar.
Amnon fell in love with Tamar. It was not mutual. She thought of him like a brother – which he was. A step-brother.
Jonadab was Amnon’s shady advisor. He told Amnon to pretend to be sick and ask for Tamar to prepare some special food for him.
When Tamar brought the food to him, he grabbed her and said, “Come to bed with me, my sister.” (That whole sentence is wrong, isn’t it?!)
She said no and tried to get away. She told him that King David would allow them to marry, if that’s what he wanted to do. (Different times!)
Instead, he overpowered her and raped her. Verse 15 is the one that breaks my heart: “Then Amnon hated her with intense hatred. In fact, he hated her more than he had loved her. Amnon said to her, ‘Get up and get out!’”
Absalom was livid and intent on getting revenge for what had been done to his sister.
Two years later, he had his opportunity. He and his brothers, including Amnon, went to shear the sheep. Absalom ordered his men to strike Amnon down and kill him. Then Absalom fled to Jerusalem.
A report came to King David that Absalom had killed all his sons.
Here’s what’s interesting (verse 32): “But Jonadab son of Shimeah, David’s brother said, ‘My lord should not think that they killed all the princes; only Amnon is dead. This has been Absalom’s express intention ever since the day Amnon raped his sister Tamar.’”
Jonadab is super shady!!-----

In this chapter, Joab knows that King David misses Absalom because he hasn’t seen him in years. So Joab hatches a plan to have a random woman go to David and ask for advice about how to keep one of her sons from being killed because he murdered his brother.
Of course David recognizes the purpose behind the question and knows that Joab has put her up to it.
He sends word that Absalom can come home, and he does.-----

Absalom is back in the city of David, but apparently, his ego has grown while he’s been in Jerusalem. He’s got a huge loyal following.

What a messy mess!David is on the run from his son Absalom. A man named Shimei who served Saul seems him on the road and curses at him. David’s men want to kill Shimei but David stops them. He feels like he deserves it. In verse 12 he says, “My son, my own flesh and blood, is trying to kill me. How much more, then, this Benjamite! Leave him alone; let him curse, for the Lord has told him to.”
Meanwhile, Absalom seeks advice from a scoundrel named Ahithophel who tells him to sleep with all of his father’s concubines in public view of everybody. He says if Absalom does this “Then all Israel will hear that you have made yourself obnoxious to your father, and the hands of everyone with you will be more resolute.” (Verse 21)
For some reason, Absalom listened.-----

Ahithophel gives more bad advice and tells Absalom to take 12,000 men and go after David.
But another advisor, Hushai, told Absalom not to listen to Ahithophel’s advice. Hushai had another plan and Absalom decided to follow it. When Ahithophel realized his advice wasn’t followed, he hung himself.-----

Absalom and his men are coming after David and his warriors. David asks that they be gentle with Absalom when they find him.
In a weird twist of fate, Absalom’s hair gets caught in a tree as he rides underneath it, and he’s left there hanging. One of David’s men reports to Joab that he saw Absalom hanging from a tree and Joab is furious that he didn’t kill him while he was vulnerable.
Joab goes and does it himself, stabbing Absalom in the stomach multiple times.
David is heart-broken when he learns of the death of his son.-----

Joab is livid that David is mourning. He tells him off saying that he’s humiliated the men who saved him. He tells his he has to encourage his men or they will all abandon him by nightfall.
David sits at the door of his gateway and his men come and honor him. Everyone begins making a plan for David to return home.-----
