Chapter three continues with the woe for Nineveh. It ends with verse 19: “Nothing can heal you; your wound is fatal. All who hear the news about you clap their hands at your fall, for who has not felt your endless cruelty?”-----

In Chapter one, David hears of King Saul’s death, and also the death of his beloved friend Jonathan.
As Saul lay dying he asked an Amalekite to kill him because he was in the throes of death. The Amalekite did so. He reported all this to David who asked him, “Why weren’t you afraid to lift your hand to destroy the Lord’s anointed?” Then he had him killed.-----

David is anointed King over Judah in this chapter. There is still an ongoing war between the House of Saul and the House of David, however.-----

The war between the house of Saul and the house of David continues in this chapter. David’s house grows stronger, while the house of Saul grows weaker and weaker.
Abner, in the house of Saul, was trying to strengthen his own position. He went to David to make a deal. He brought David’s promised wife Michal to him (even though she was wed to another).
When Joab, in David’s camp, found out Abner had come and gone, he was livid. He had men hunt down Abner and bring him to him. Joab killed him by stabbing him in the stomach. David was not happy about this!
Verse 29 says: “May his blood fall on the head of Joab and on his whole family! May Joab’s family never be without someone who has a running sore or leprosy or who leans on a crutch or who falls by the sword or who lacks food.” Dang! What a curse!-----

Saul’s son Ish-Bosheth is murdered in this chapter. The men who do it are so proud of themselves. They cut off his head and bring it King David like a prize!
In verses 9-11, he says, “As surely as the Lord lives, who has delivered me out of every trouble, when someone told me, ‘Saul is dead,’ and thought he was bringing good news, I seized him and put him to death in Ziklag. That was the reward I gave him for his news! How much more – when wicked men have killed an innocent man in his own house and on his own bed – should I not now demand his blood from your hand and rid the earth of you!”-----

David became King over Israel in chapter five. He conquered Jerusalem, and then defeated the Philistines.
There were two battles with the Philistines and, after seeking God, David was victorious in both.
Verse 24 says, “As soon as you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the poplar trees, move quickly, because that will mean the Lord has gone out in front of you to strike the Philistine army.”
Marching in the “tops” of the trees. Wow!-----

The ark of God is brought to Jerusalem in this chapter. But they didn’t carry it the way it was designed to be carried – with acacia poles. Instead, they set the ark on a new cart, and had the cart pulled by oxen.
At one point, the oxen stumbled and Uzzah reached out and took hold of the ark to steady it. Verse 7 says, “The Lord’s anger burned against Uzzah because of his irreverent act; therefore God struck him down, and he died there beside the ark of God.”
I imagine touching the ark was like touching a live, electrical wire. It was filled with God’s power which has to be exponentially stronger than any electrical current we can imagine.
David was so upset about the death of Uzzah that he left the ark at someone else’s house (Obed-Edom) for three months. Finally, he went to get the ark and bring it to the City of David.
He was dancing and rejoicing as he and all Israel brought up the ark. He danced so much that he nearly danced out of his clothes, a linen ephod. His wife Michal, Saul’s daughter, was disgusted by this.
He told her in verse 22, “I will become even more undignified than this, and I will be humiliated in my own eyes.”-----

In this chapter, David wants to build a temple for the ark of God. At first Nathan the prophet tells him to go ahead and do it. But during the night, the Lord speaks to Nathan and tells him he doesn’t want David building him a house. David’s offspring will be the one to build a house for His Name. He shares all the blessings that David and his offspring will enjoy.
David says a prayer of thanks to the Lord.-----

David has many victories in this chapter – over the Philistines, the Moabites, the people of Zobah, the Arameans, and the Edomites.
Verse 15 says, “David reigned over all Israel, doing what was just and right for all his people.”-----

David shows kindness to Mephibosheth, Jonathan’s son, in this chapter. Mephibosheth was “lame in both feet.”
David treated him and his young son, Mika, like members of the royal family.-----
